Charles Robinson nasce ad Albany, Georgia il
23 settembre del 1930. Diviene cieco all'età
di sei anni per un incidente. "The genius" com'era
soprannominato, crea il suo primo gruppo nel
1947: Il "Maxim trio" (sullo stile del "King
cole trio") Il vero apripista della musica soul,
con canzoni come: "I got the woman", che dimostrano
come riuscì a trasformare la musica gospel
e religiosa, in qualcosa di laico ma di altrettanto
spirituale. Grazie poi al suo grande talento
vocale, riusciva a trasformare qualsiasi canzone;
blues, pop, country, in qualcosa di interiore
e di vicino all'anima appunto.
Da lui hanno preso spunto e
coraggio in seguito, tantissimi cantanti di
colore. Quando si siede davanti ad un pianoforte
è irresistibile e coinvolgente, ed è
ancora oggi l'artista di colore più conosciuto
stimato ed ammirato del mondo. Tanti i suoi
successi, sia come autore che come inteprete.
Impossibile comprendere tutta la sua confusa
e sterminata discografia, conviene come in altri
casi, rivolgersi ad una delle sue tante raccolte. |
